This listing is for a beautiful 19th C. antique Venetian 4-layer African Trade Bead necklace with (46) beads.
This handcrafted necklace was purchased from a very nice Estate and
is in excellent condition with no noted flaws or damage. Slight pitting and cavities are commonly found on these early beads and is considered part of the patina attesting to their age and extensive use. Beads vary in size and pattern detail as each is hand made. Strung and tied with red cloth/string.
Measures approximately 16.5″ long.
Necklace features multi layered glass beads consisting of 4-layers of richly colored cobalt and rust with white. Beads are sometimes called Rosetta or Star Beads. Made in Venice and traded in Africa as early as the 13th and 14th centuries with Venetian Chevron beads being the most collectible of all the Venetian “trade beads”.
The Chevrons are made in a multi-part process by adding one layer of glass over another into the mold. The layers of Chevron beads are counted from the innermost layer to the exterior layer with each layer being a different color.
